Whitby loss keeps the McCoys close

Dundas Real McCoys are even more intent on making a serious run at first place in the Major League Hockey standings than they were before the Christmas break when their schedule was put on hold until Jan. 2 because of the weather.

Entering the final weekend (Dec. 27) of play before the end of the year, Whitby missed a golden opportunity to increase its lead on the second place McCoys by dropping a 5-2 decision to the Brantford Blast at Whitby. The previous Sunday, the Dunlops had edged Norwood Vipers 5-4.

Dundas remains five points behind league-leading Whitby with four games-in-hand on their eastern rivals. Whitby sits atop with 13 wins and five losses followed by Dundas with 10 wins, four losses and an overtime loss.

More than that, it is decision time for general manager and co-coach Don Robertson because the Ontario Hockey Association’s cut down date is approaching quickly.

“We’ll be faced with making some difficult decisions over the next three games because we have to reduce our roster to 25 players on playing cards. We will also be looking to have a few open cards, and to add some depth on defence,” said Robertson.

Next action for the Real McCoys, and the entire League, is Friday when Dundas is scheduled to play at Brantford against the Blast at 8 p.m. In keeping with that game, the McCoys will wear the number 40 on their helmets for the remainder of the season to demonstrate support for Whitby Dunlops’ player Don Sanderson and his family during his on-going battle to regain consciousness as the result of an unfortunate head injury incurred in Brantford. Sanderson remains in Hamilton General Hospital.

The McCoys traditional Teddy Bear Toss, Turkey Raffle, and Night with the Team events draw has been re-scheduled for Friday, Jan. 9 when the Norwood Vipers visit for a 7:45 p.m. puck drop.

That night, Dundas will honour the recent sudden passing of Judy Crabb, long-time club booster, and mother of former McCoys’ and current Blast equipment manager, Ken Crabb Jr., with a moment’s silence prior to the game.

The McCoys’ Dec. 20 game at Whitby against the Dunlops and the Dec. 19 match in Dundas with the Baltimore Clippers were postponed by snow. The game against Baltimore has been tentatively rescheduled for Friday, Feb. 20 at the JL Grightmire Arena. Game time will be 7:45 p.m. No date for the Whitby game has been set.
