The Mohawk Mountaineers moved into a first place tie with Fanshawe in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association West Region men’s volleyball with a tough 3-1 decision over the Falcons at the Fennell Gymnasium on Thursday (Jan. 15).
The scores were 25-13, 16-25, 25-21, 25-20.
Mohawk needed the win badly. They improved to 9-1 while Fanshawe slipped to 9-2. The Mountaineers only loss came Oct. 15 in the season opener in London.
Steve Pawelczyk (Barton) led Mohawk with 16 kills, one stuff block and two serving aces. Kevin de Jonge (Guido de Bres) had eight kills, one block and two aces, while Gregory Mousseau (Hillfield Strathallan) scored nine kills, one block and one ace.
The match could have easily gone to a fifth and deciding set, as the Mountaineers trailed 11-16 in the fourth, but made an impressive rally. Mohawk coach James Bradley described this match as critical, especially since the Mountaineers were swept at Fanshawe in the earlier meeting. Bradley said that was the poorest match he’s seen his team play, perhaps ever.
Handing the Falcons a second loss may prove pivotal in determining which team finishes first and which team finishes second in the region. Mohawk has another very tough match next Thursday (Jan. 22) when it visits the second place (7-3) Humber Hawks.
