The Mohawk women’s volleyball team started Ontario Colleges Athletic Association second semester play with a 25-22, 25-16, 25-15 victory over the Fanshawe Falcons at the Fennell Gymnasium Thursday (Jan.15).
The victory pushed the Mountaineers record to 9-3 for a tie for third place in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association’s West division. The fifth place Falcons fell to 7-6.
Mohawk’s Candice Kragten (Cayuga Secondary) led all scorers with 11 points from five kills, three stuff blocks and three serving aces. Rachel VanHartingsveldt (Durham Christian) had seven kills, one block and two aces. Allison Feliciano (Galt Collegiate) collected four kills, three blocks and two aces.
After a slow start in the first set, Mohawk took control in the second game. The Mountaineers played without ace right side player Leah Waxman (Port Dover) who was ill. Coach Michelle Foxcroft said, “It just proves that our team is more than our starting seven and we’ve got a lot of people on our bench who can (come in).”
Foxcroft said the team has been working very hard the past two weeks since returning from the break and many of the rookies are giving the veterans a run for their money.
Mohawk hits the court again next Thursday (Jan. 22) when they visit the first place and perfect (12-0) Humber Hawks.
