Mohawk’s rally falls short in OCAA court contest

The Mohawk Mountaineers saw their Ontario Colleges Athletic Association men’s basketball record fall to five games below .500, dropping a 96-93 decision to the Lambton Lions (6-4) in Sarnia Tuesday (Jan. 20).

Mohawk trailed 46-37 at the half.

Despite 26 points from Jerome Smith (St. Thomas More) and 25 from Ryan Carrafiello (St. Thomas More), Mohawk fell just a bit short. Alen Beader (Glendale) and newcomer Mike Soluk (Ancaster) each had 11 points for the Mountaineers.

“We’re competing, said Mohawk coach Brian Jonker. “We’re just not finishing the games. We’ve dug ourselves a big hole and there’s not a lot of room for error left.”

The Mountaineers, 3-8, have seven games remaining in the regular season, including the next four at home. The first of those games will be tonight (Friday, Jan. 23) at 8 p.m. when the Redeemer Royals visit the Fennell Gymnasium.

The women also host Redeemer, starting at 6 p.m.
