It’s not often both Mohawk volleyball teams fall in defeat on the same night, but it happened at Humber College in Etobicoke Thursday (Jan. 22). The home town Hawks downed the Mountaineers 3-0 in men’s action and 3-2 in women’s play.
The Mohawk men saw their record fall to 9-2, leaving them two points behind Fanshawe (10-2) and two points ahead of Humber (8-3) in a tight battle for top spot in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association’s West Region.
The women’s match was a nail biter. Despite 16 kills by Leah Waxman (Port Dover), the Mountaineers suffered a heartbreaking 14-16 loss in the fifth and deciding set of a very close match. Mohawk is now 10-4 and tied with St. Clair (10-3), for third place in the West. The Hawks are flying high at 13-0 but are just two points ahead of Nipissing (12-1).
Both Mohawk teams will hope the friendly confines of the Fennell Gymnasium will help get them back to winning ways on Saturday (Jan. 24), when St. Clair visits. The women will play at noon followed by the men at 2 p.m.
