Win lifts Mohawk women into tie for third in OCAA volleyball

The Mohawk women’s volleyball team moved into a tie for third place in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association’s West Region with St. Clair, after defeating the visiting Saints 25-19, 17-25, 25-19, 25-10 at the Fennell Gymnasium on Saturday (Jan. 24).

Both teams are now 11-4.

Leah Waxman (Port Dover) had 17 kills and one ace to lead the Mountaineers, while teammate Stacy Dafoe (Paris District) had eight kills, three stuff blocks and four aces.

Mohawk struggled in the second set. “The players got a little too relaxed after winning the first set and it showed,” said coach Michelle Foxcroft. “You can’t step back. You have to keep stepping forward.”

Despite the fact Mohawk and St. Clair have identical win-loss records, Foxcroft was disappointed her team couldn’t sweep the Saints in three straight games, because of the possible tie-breaker implications at season’s end. However, Foxcroft said the Mountaineers needed the win and must now look forward to playing Sault College, Nipissing and Canadore next weekend at the Fennell gym.
