MAC volleyball team earns berth in Junior Olympic tourney


A third place finish went to the Mountain Athletic Club Volleyball 16-under boys at the 24-team Can Am tournament in Rochester, N.Y., on the weekend of Jan. 17-18. This result earned the MAC 16U team a spot in the USA Junior Olympic Volleyball Championships set for Atlanta, Georgia, on July 2-5.

In pool play, MAC finished second. They were defeated by Pace Bootlegger Blue, 22-25, 14-25, but rebounded with wins over the Northumberland Breakers, 25-22, 26-24, and Pitt Elite 25-16, 25-13.

In the re-pool, MAC finished first by defeating the Orlando Gold, 25-16, 23-25, 15-13, and Yorktowne, 25-18, 25-21. Qualifying for the top eight teams Gold division quarter finals, MAC defeated Eden 25-16, 25 19, but was stopped in the semi-finals by eventual tournament champions, the Pace Bootlegger Blue, 11-25, 28-30.

The 16U boys are mentored by head coach Chris Marynowicz of Hamilton, and assistants Derek Jones of Burlington and Jeff Hargot of Hamilton.
