Wildcats on the prowl for basketball players

Hamilton Wildcats Basketball Academy is forming an Amateur Athletic Union team for girls 15-16 (born 1993 or later) to compete in tournaments during the spring and summer.

The program will be fundamentals driven, with stress placed on playing the game, not running the play. Program will be taught by qualified professional coaches. The goal is to provide players with an opportunity to gain experience in competitive game situations, improve their fundamentals and help them take their game to the next level for the 2009-10 season.

The spring/summer league will allow individual athlete skills development while improving fundamentals. Athletic conditioning, teamwork and court smarts, and team rhythm and footwork will also be emphasized.

AAU basketball is very competitive and is generally considered a higher level than school or Ontario Basketball Association play. Kids who play AAU ball usually have committed to basketball as their main sport. AAU is geared to athletes who would like to extend their basketball season, improve their skills and compete at a higher level.

Athletes are allowed to play for both an AAU team and OBA team at the same time.

The program will run from April to August and be conducted by a four-member coaching staff. Tournaments will be held both locally and in the U.S.

Tryouts will start with registration at Saltfleet High School on Sunday, March 29 at 12:30 p.m. with court time set for 1 to 3 p.m. Sessions will resume on Tuesday, March 31, 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Saltfleet and Wednesday, April 1, 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Saltfleet. Players should be prepared to attend at least two tryouts and three if possible. There is a $20 (non refundable) tryout fee.
