Mohawk women celebrate, men will try again

Two mountain rivals squared off on the volleyball court at the Fennell Gym and divided the spoils. Mohawk’s women swept Redeemer 3-0 but the Mountaineer men dropped a 3-2 verdict to the visiting Royals on Friday (Feb. 6) in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association play.

Leah Waxman (Port Dover) had nine kills as the Mohawk women won 25-14, 25-20, 25-19. Stacy Dafoe (Paris District) had seven kills and one service ace while Candice Kragten (Cayuga Secondary) managed five kills and two stuff blocks for the winners. Erika Straatsma led Redeemer with seven kills, two blocks and one ace.

Mohawk upped its record to 15-4, with one regular season game remaining (Wednesday, Feb. 11) at home against Niagara. Humber leads the West Region at 17-0, while Nipissing is 15-2. Redeemer fell to 7-12.

The Mohawk men let one slip away, as Redeemer rallied from two sets down to beat the Mountaineers 13-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-22, 15-9. Steve Pawelczyk (Barton) had 18 kills, two blocks and three aces for Mohawk. Greg Mousseau (Hillfield-Strathallan) collected 15 kills and three blocks.

The Royals were led by Ryan Talsma’s 18 kills. The Mountaineers missed a chance to pull back into a tie for first place with Fanshawe. The Falcons are 12-3. Mohawk and Redeemer are both 11-4 and Humber still has three games remaining and is 10-3.

The last regular season game for the Mountaineers will be Wednesday (Feb. 11) when Niagara comes calling.
