MAC volleyballers better rankings after tourney play

Both Mountain Athletic Club’s volleyball 15-under girls and 16U girls moved up in the rankings to finish in seventh place at their respective Challenge Cup Tournaments on the (Feb. 7) weekend.

Playing up in the 16U division in Barrie, the MAC 15U girls finished first in their round robin pool. MAC lost to E381 (20-25, 15-25) and then defeated the Oakville Thunder 15U White (25-12, 25-12).

In the quarter finals, MAC fell to the Waterdown Raiders 16U (25-23, 22-25, 8-15) and then to the Peel Selects 94 (23-25, 15-25) to finish seventh.

Players of the tournament were Kate Miller (Hamilton), who led on defense, and Kelsey Kovar (Stoney Creek) who did an excellent job on offense.

The MAC 15U girls are coached by Ancaster residents, Nicole Trombetta, Meghan Boyle, and Geoff Reiner. The team includes Jasmine Buddingh, Hamilton; Victoria Ho, Hamilton; Kelsey Kovar, Stoney Creek; Kayleigh Mahony, Ancaster; Katie Miller, Hamilton; Chelsey Moris, Mount Hope; Sarah McLaughlin, Ancaster; Michelle Ogrodnik, Ancaster; Erica Pomeroy, Hamilton; Alexandra Rocca, Ancaster; Paula Sant’Anna, Ancaster; Maddy Szlafarski, Burlington; and Jennifer Vegh, Hamilton.

The 16U girls also finished seventh and moved up in rankings at the 16U Challenge Cup Championship West held at St. Mary Secondary in Hamilton.

MAC finished second in the pool losing to the Predators Black 16U (26-24, 25-15) and defeating the Stratford Stingers Gold (25-11, 25-16).

In the pre-quarters, Mac defeated Riverside (21-25, 25-6, 15-10) and lost to the eventual Bronze medalists, South County Bandits (25-19, 25-19).

The MAC 16U girls are coached by Chiara Salvatore of Hamilton and Jeff Hinchcliffe of Binbrook.
