The Mountain Athletic Club brought home gold and bronze medals in boys 16-and-under and girls 17U volleyball Challenge Cup play on the weekend.
Competing in the Challenge Cup Premier in Brighton, the boys 16U finished first in pool play. Mac defeated the Waterloo Tigers Black (25-11, 25-13), the Pakmen (20-25, 25-23, 18-16) and the London Forest City Green (27-25, 25-23).
In the quarter finals, they pushed past the Northumberland Breakers (25-19, 25-23) and Toronto West (25-23, 28-26) in the semifinals. MAC defeated Crush (25-21, 25-20) in the championship match.
The 16U boys are coached by Chris Marynowicz and Jeff Hargot, of Hamilton, and Derek Jones, of Burlington. Playing at the 17U Challenge Cup in Welland, MAC finished first in their pool by defeating the Niagara Rapids Black (25-22, 25-14), the Twin Bridges Thunder (26-24, 25-16), and DRVC (25-13, 25-18).
In the crossover, MAC beat the Cambridge Hawks (25-13, 30-28) before falling in the semifinals in a hard fought match against the Peel Selects, (19-25, 21-25). MAC followed up with an outstanding match against Toronto, defeating the Aces (25-17, 27-25) to win the bronze medal.
