The Stoney Creek Dofasco Bruins skated and scored their way to the 2009 Bantam House League Sweetheart Tournament (Feb. 13-15).
The affair, organized by the Stoney Creek Girls Hockey Association, is the longest running female hockey tournament in Ontario and has been staged for 35 years. The three-day tournament was held at the Mohawk 4 Ice Centre.
The Dofasco Bruins didn’t lose a game during the tournament. They beat Niagara Falls, 3-0, dropped Oakville 4-1, and blanked St. Catharines Rebels 1-0 win in opening round games.
They played Cambridge in the opening round of the playoffs and won 2-1, sending the Bruins to the championship game against the Hamilton Hawks Flyers.
The game was tied 0-0 after regulation time and went into a five-minute, scoreless overtime period (4-on-4). That sent it to sudden death penalty shots which went to five rounds before the Bruins scored for the 1-0 championship.
The winning team included Madelaine Bird, Courtney McCulloch, Meagan McBurney, Ashley Umolac, Rachel Harper, Morgan MacLean, Breanna Tilban, Ivana Atlija, Emily Kawa, Courtney Zahorodni, Katie Green, Julia DiMatteo, Rebecca Reynolds, Cassandra Bouchard, Brooke Watson, and Shandis Griffin, and coaches Doug MacLean, Neil McBurney, Dan Atlija, Darlene Bird and Sandra DiMatteo.
