Mohawk takes one medal at OCAA curling finale

The Mohawk mixed team played an excellent semi final but had to settle for the bronze medal in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Curling Championships at the Glendale Golf and Country Club in Hamilton on Sunday (Feb. 22). The Mountaineers dropped a 4-3 decision to the St. Clair Saints.

Members of the Mohawk team included skip Andrea Thompson, vice Nevin Breedon, second Jessy Vittie, lead Mike Watson and alternate Katie Mattice. Barry Macklin and Kris Blonski were the Mountaineer coaches.

St. Clair moved on to the final and were defeated 10-2 by the Algoma University Thunderbirds of Sault Ste. Marie.

In women’s semi final action, the Fleming College Knights of Peterborough needed an extra end to shade Mohawk 6-5. Unfortunately for the Mountaineers, there were only four teams in the group and, by rule, no bronze medal was awarded. Members of the Mohawk women’s rink included skip Jenna Harrington, third Christine Moore, second Kathryn Papaioannou, lead Jenn Montgomery and alternate Julia McQueen.

Fleming advanced and defeated the Confederation Thunderhawks of Thunder Bay 7-5 for the women’s title.

In the men’s competition Fleming of Peterborough whipped the the Niagara Knights 8-1 for the gold medal.

The Mohawk men failed to make the playoffs after only one victory in the round robin. But that win, over Seneca, was what Niagara needed. The Knights got to play in a tie-breaker against Seneca and beat the Sting en route to their silver medal.

Members of the Mohawk men’s team included skip Matt Kimber, vice Michael Dufour, second Andrew Santaguida, lead Joel Firman and alternate Mike Dziuban.
