Mohawk’s Pawelczyk casts his own volleyball shadow

Fourth year, rightside hitter Steve Pawelczyk of the Mohawk Mountaineers is the Men’s Ontario Colleges Athletic Association volleyball Player of the Year.

In his previous three seasons at the middle position for the Mountaineers, Pawelczyk had been overshadowed by the talent on those teams, including former All-Canadians Peter Sniuolis and Jasmin Cull. When third-year rightside player Kevin Watson graduated, Steve was approached and accepted the challenge of moving positions for the 2008-2009 season and seamlessly stepped into the new spot.

Pawelczyk led the league in scoring and currently sits second all-time in career aces.

Mohawk also placed two women on the first all-star team (Leah Waxman and Elizabeth Johnston) and one on the Second Team (Rachel Vanhartingsveldt). On the Men’s Second All-star team two Mountaineers made it (Zac Schulz and Sean Lowe).

The Women’s Player of the Year award goes to Landis Doyle of the Humber Hawks. She has been one of the top players in the country since her arrival at Humber College three seasons ago.

Her skills are second to none at the middle position finishing second in total points, averaging 4.22 PPG in the West Region. Doyle was also recognized earlier this season as the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association Athlete of the Month. Doyle co-holds the OCAA record for serving aces in a match with 13. This is also Doyle’s first All-Canadian nomination.
