Bulldogs get back into the win column

The Hamilton Bulldogs stopped their American Hockey League losing streak at three games, defeating the Lake Erie Monsters 3-1 on Sunday.

The Monsters put a scare into the Bulldogs, scoring just 55 seconds into the first frame. Chris Durno snapped a shot that sailed past the blocker of Hamilton goaltender Cedrick Desjardins.

The Bulldogs tied the game 12 minutes later. Yanick Lehoux’s shot was stopped by goalie Tyler Weiman but he couldn’t control the rebound and Steve Gainey slapped it into the net.

Hamilton took a 2-1 lead at 11:01 of the middle frame. Brock Trotter fed a pass to Lehoux, who skated between two Lake Erie defenders. Lehoux snapped a shot past Weiman for his first goal in nine games.

Trotter scored one minute later. Gainey hustled to the Lake Erie blue line to keep the puck in the Monsters’ zone before sending a pass to Trotter to spring him on a breakaway for the goal.

Lake Erie outshot the Bulldogs, 41-22. Neither team scored on the four power play opportunities they each had.

The Bulldogs travel to Syracuse to battle the Crunch on Tuesday (March 3) for a 7 p.m. game.
