5-pinners from Hamilton strike it big at provincial title tourney

Hamilton bowlers dominated the 2009 Ontario Open 5 Pin Championships.

With the best bowlers from 15 zones across Ontario playing in four team and two singles events, Hamilton rolled to three gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze medal on the weekend (April 11-13).

Winging their way westward to compete in the Canadian 5 Pin Championships in Saskatoon, June 3-6, are the Hamilton men’s team, the Hamilton mixed team and Martin Talbot who won the men’s singles crown.

Silver medals went to the Hamilton ladies team and the Hamilton senior mixed team. Brenda Walters won bronze in the ladies singles event. Walters also collected $4,100 for her perfect 450 game rolled during the ladies team qualifying round. It was only the fourth perfect game in 45 years of the Ontario championships.

Men’s team champions are Jeff Young, Martin Talbot, Jeff Forester, Eric Milne, Dave Birkby, Mitch Davies and coach Kelly Martin.

Mixed team champions are Mike Tuck Jr., John Young, Guy Vernon, Nicole Latka, Krista Derkach, Dayna Dunn and coach Geoff Dunn.
