Mac grad Silvestri hauls in football coach honour

Claudio Silvestri is the 2009 Golden Horseshoe High School Football Coach of the Year as chosen by the McMaster Marauders football team.

Silvestri, a graduate of McMaster University in 1990, has been head coach of Hamilton’s St. Thomas More senior boys’ team for the past 11 seasons. His Knights have captured three consecutive city high school championships.

In 2006, Silvestri became the first Hamilton coach to win the Golden Horseshoe Bowl under the new OFSAA Bowl format. A year later he guided the Knights to a second consecutive Golden Horseshoe Bowl and was the winner of the fourth annual Wismer Award for high school coaching excellence.

The McMaster football team has four of Silvestri’s former players on its roster including John Hornby, Elliot Hudecki, Jason Medeiros, and Jesse Montani.

Silvestri is an alumnus of the McMaster football program. He played for McMaster head coach Bernie Custis from 1986 to 1988, and for McMaster head coach Steve Bruno in 1989, earning the McMaster Special Teams Award.

He returned to McMaster as an assistant coach in 1996 under then-McMaster head coach Al Bruno.

He will be presented with the Golden Horseshoe Football Coach of the Year at the 12th Annual McMaster Football Gala Dinner on Thursday, April 30. The St. Thomas More football team will receive $1,000.00 in football equipment from T. Litzen Sports.

The McMaster Football Gala Dinner will be hosted at the David Braley Athletic Centre. The reception begins at 5:30 p.m. with dinner commencing at 7 p.m.
