17-under volleyball girls rebound for gold

The 15th seed Mountain Athletic Club girls’ volleyball team won the gold medal in Division 1 Tier 2 of the 17-under Provincial Championships held in Waterloo on the weekend.

In the preliminary round robin, MAC 17U had a shaky start losing to the 19th ranked Titans DYB, 25-20, 27-29, 14-16, but moved on to defeat North Bay Kalev, 25-12, 25-17. They lost a close match to the second ranked KW Predators and eventual Division 1 tournament champions, 16-25, 24-26 which placed them in the second tier of Division 1.

MAC started the second day of the re-seed pools with a 25-15, 25-17 win over the Sarnia Twin Bridges and a 25-9, 25-10 win over the Etobicoke Titans followed by a close loss to the London Forest City Green 16U 13-25, 25-20, 13-15.

In the playoffs, MAC 17U fought back with a win over the BVC Strikers, 25-18, 25-8, and defeated the Halton Hurricanes Black 25-16, 23-25, 15-13. In the semi finals MAC pushed past the Peel Selects, 25-18, 25-16 and pressed on to win the championship gold medal over the Sudbury Northern Chill, 25-16, 21-25, 17-15.

MAC will be competing in the 17U National Championships in early May in Ottawa. The team is coached by Denis Levesque of Kilbride and Jenn Eccles of Burlington.
