Majors keep Thunderbirds looking for first win


thunderbirds1The Hamilton Thunderbirds are still looking for their first senior Intercounty Baseball League win of the 2009 season after the visiting London Majors handed their hosts a 4-2 setback on Sunday (May 10). The loss was Hamilton’s second, while the Majors opened their campaign.

The Majors’ Mike Mitro pitched five strong innings for the win, allowing two earned runs on three hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Craig Bate finished up with four shutout innings, allowing just one hit with eight strikeouts and one walk, to earn the save.

Jess Bechard, Chris Chambers and Maso Inouye all had two hits for the Majors, including a double each.

Hamilton starter Ryan Nowak went five innings and allowed three runs – two earned – on seven hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Four relievers finished up for the Thunderbirds, as London wound up stranding 10 runners. The Majors outhit the Thunderbirds 10-4 who committed one error to London’s clean slate.

London scored single runs in the first, second, fifth and seventh innings while Hamilton scored its runs in the second frame.

Hamilton invites the Brantford Red Sox to Bernie Arbour Stadium next Friday (May 15) for a 7.30 p.m. first pitch. On Sunday, the Thunderbirds will visit London for a re-match with the Majors at 1 p.m.
