Ancaster, Oakville, High Park open with wins at Little League Championships


new_sc_logo_with_optimistIn the opening game of the 2009 Little League Baseball Major District House League Championships, the Ancaster Yankees defeated the Dundas Yankees 4-1 on Friday night (June 19). For Ancaster, Mark Szostak went 2 for 2 with a single and a double. Szoztak also went five innings allowing 1 run on 2 hits and 6 walks. For Dundas, Ben Sim had a RBI single in the second inning to plate his team’s only run.

The rivalry between High Park Red Sox and Stoney Creek Astros was renewed on Friday night with High Park scoring 11 runs in the top of the sixth inning for a 13-3 victory. For High Park, Matthew Voight had three singles in four plate appearances, two in the sixth inning, and scoring twice. Also for High Park, Andres Gonzalez went 3-for-3, all singles. For Stoney Creek, Nick Jambrosic went 2-for-2 with a single and a double.

In the final game of the day (played in Oakville), the Blue Jays defeated the Erindale Indians, 8-1. Jamison Higa had a three-run homerun in the fifth inning. Mathew Hrycaj and Mason Webb had the only two hits for Erindale. Webb’s single scored Hrycaj.

Due to the weather and field conditions, all games scheduled for Saturday (June 20) have been rescheduled. The schedule for the day is as follows:

3:30 p.m. – Dundas vs. Erindale
6:00 p.m. – Oakville vs. High Park
8:30 p.m. – Stoney Creek vs. Ancaster

Six teams are involved in this round robin tournament, playing in two pools with three games guaranteed. The top two teams in each pool advance to the semi-finals. High Park is defending champion. All games will be played at Optimist Little League Park in Stoney Creek off of Highway 8.
