Another successful season was completed this past week for the Battlefield Babe Ruth League Cal Ripken division T-Ball (4-6) and Rookie (pitching machine 7-8). The third season of Cal Ripken divisions being offered for youth in East Hamilton / Stoney Creek showed the national pattern of growth with more players for a second straight year.

The T-Ballers finished off an exciting year with a fun day tournament at Eastwood Park for two or three games, had a BBQ, received Cal Ripken Baseball pennants and participated with the Toronto Blue Jays road show. The players received their league participation trophies and another BBQ last week at Sir Wilfrid Laurier School diamond. Sponsors – MPP Paul Miller, CATCH, Councillor Chad Collins and Queenston Stationery – were acknowledged.

The rookie players also finished their year with the City Championships at Eastwood Park. MPP Miller Diamondbacks finished second to the Binbrook Dragons, losing the final game in exciting fashion, 14-13. All players received a participation medal for the tournament and a league participation trophy. Rookie sponsors MP Wayne Marston and Boston Pizza (Queenston Rd) were thanked.

Next season, Cal Ripken T-Ball will play Tuesday nights only with scheduled practices on some Mondays. Rookie games will remain on Wednesday nights with select scheduled practices on Monday nights as well.

The Major division teams still have one or two games left in their season and the Trailblazers tournament team finishes its season at Dundas on Sept 11-13.

Tryouts for next season for the 9U All-star team will start in October for a few weeks and then move indoors in February. The league’s website and this site will have additional details when available.

The 13U Babe Ruth team next season plans an experience of a lifetime by entering the Cal Ripken Sunset Classic in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, from Aug. 15-20. The tournament features 16 teams and each is guaranteed a minimum of seven games at some replica legendary parks like Shibe Park and the Polo Grounds.

Any 13-year-old interested must be registered with Battlefield Babe Ruth League for 2010 to participate. This tournament team will also play three other tournaments during the year (Hyde Park, Lewiston, and North Tonawanda, N.Y.)
