The defending Ontario Colleges Athletic Association’s women’s fastball champion St. Clair Saints downed last year’s bronze medal winning Mohawk Mountaineers 3-0 in opening day play in Windsor Saturday (Sep. 12).
The Mountaineers failed to get a hit and had only two base runners, via an error and a walk. The Mountaineers’ Erica Downey connected on a couple of line shots, but both found fielders’ mitts.
It was a tough setback for Mohawk pitcher Jessica Roloson who had a strong outing. Roloson went all the way on a two hitter, walking just two and striking out five. The two hits were line drives to the gaps with one going for a triple and the other for a home run.
“Overall, the team did very well,” said Mohawk head coach Brian Weller. “We played strong defence and we’ll be working on our offence. I am sure it will come around. They do show promise.”
The Mountaineers return to action Tuesday (Sep. 15) when they visit the Seneca Sting in North York.
