Mohawk opened the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association’s men’s soccer season drawing 1-1 with the Conestoga Condors on Wednesday (Sept. 15) in Kitchener. The Mountaineers struck first on the quarter hour as Yousef Mohammad controlled a cross from Matthew Kernick and put the ball into the back of the net.
But the lead would be short lived. Just a minute later Conestoga’s Dario Perjia took advantage of some confusion in front of the Mohawk goal and notched the equalizer. The Condors’ record is now 1-1.
Mountaineers’ coach Richard Bennett was pleased with his young squad. “Sure, we would have liked to win, but we’ll settle for a tie,” said Bennett. “It was a good performance. We had lots of chances but just couldn’t finish them off. We’ll make some adjustments. It was a confident start but we’ve got a big test in our home opener against Humber Friday (Sep. 18). We’ll play our own game and see how it goes.”
Game time Friday against the Hawks will be at 4:30 p.m. at Mohawk Sports Park. The Mohawk women are hosts to Humber at the same time.
