Saints bedevil Mountaineers in OCAA fastball

Victoria Lomas

The Mountaineers will wear a 20 on their sleeves to honour former teammate Victoria Lomas.

The Mohawk Mountaineers found themselves on the short end of an Ontario Colleges Athletic Association women’s fastball doubleheader.

The visiting St. Clair Saints blanked Mohawk, 9-0 and 7-0, on Tuesday (Sept. 22) at Mohawk Sports Park. In the opener, Candice Gatecliffe tossed a two hitter as the Saints dumped the Mountaineers and Jessica Roloson.

Gatecliffe then drove in three runs in the nightcap, but it was Samantha Newton who pitched a three-hitter and helped her own cause with a pair of runs-batted-in as St. Clair won 7-0.

Jessica Denstedt started and lost for Mohawk.

Prior to the game, the Mountaineers honoured a teammate from last season, Victoria Lomas, who passed away recently. In a moving ceremony at Mohawk Sports Park, Victoria’s No. 20 jersey was presented to her parents, Margaret and Ron. The team will have “20” displayed on their uniforms for the rest of the season and the number has been retired permanently.
