Hurricanes plan gala to honour all-time great team

hurricnesFor the past year, the Hamilton Hurricanes (football) organization has been busy with an incredibly special project – assembling its all-time team. Our organization has a very rich tradition by having some outstanding football players go through this program. Some went on to great things in football, and countless others went on to great things in life.

Originally, the plan was to select the 27 players in our club history to represent the ’Canes as our “greatest” ever. But once the process started, many questions arose: How can you compare the coaching innovations of Bob Nordoff to the hard-hitting coaching style of Dennis Griffin? How can you compare the leadership and determination of quarterback Joe Fabiani in the early ’70s to the incredible raw talents and “do anything to win” style of QB Jason Hayes in the early ’90s? These were just a couple of the comparison questions that arose which led the selection committee to re-think the whole process and decide that the smartest thing to do was to divide the teams into time periods to make sure that all the great Hurricanes players of the past deserving of special recognition received it.

On Nov. 7, the Hurricanes plan to honour these great players for their achievements as Hurricanes. Several ’Canes alumni used the program as a stepping-stone and went on to have great football careers after their junior playing days. Several – including Paul Masotti, Dale Sanderson, Nigel Williams, Roger Dunbrack – had wonderful long-time professional careers in the Canadian Football League. But on Nov. 7, we will celebrate the achievements of 81 of our greatest players and coaches for their time and dedication to the club.

But having a single event to bring some of the best football talents our city has produced into one room for one incredible event isn’t without challenges. The biggest mountain the club will have to climb to make this an unforgettable evening will be trying to contact the 81 former ’Canes in addition to all the people who followed the team through our history as well as the guys who played alongside all of these players from 1963 to 1994.

The Hurricanes have been fortunate enough over the past two years to build a great database of over 1,200 individuals who have been involved with the Canes – from trainers to coaches to executives to the players. Unfortunately, we still don’t have contact information for close to 1,000 of them.

The Hurricanes are a vital part of Hamilton’s sports history and the club hopes that it can count on your help to make this celebration an event to remember. Additional information can be found at the Hurricanes website www.hamiltonhurricanes.ca.
