‘Overconfidence’ trips up rugby Mountaineers

The Humber Hawks won their second straight Ontario Colleges Athletic Association rugby game, a 12-10 squeaker over the Mohawk Mountaineers, in Etobicoke on Saturday (Oct. 3) and the difference was a convert.

After giving up the first score, Mohawk bounced back on a Joel Clarke try. But the Hawks forged ahead once again. John Packer of the Mountaineers closed out the scoring in the final five minutes. Mohawk head coach Alex Paris felt despite being behind in the first half, his team was doing well.

“We had possession, territorially, in the first half,” said Paris, “but I think once we scored we became a bit overconfident.”

That’s not good when you play Humber, the reigning league champions. The Mountaineers will try to get back to winning ways on Wednesday (Oct. 7) when they visit Conestoga Condors in Kitchener.
