The Brampton-based club team, Spartans, downed the Mohawk Mountaineers 108-104 in an entertaining men’s exhibition basketball game at the Fennell Gymnasium on Saturday (Oct. 3).
Former Laurier Golden Hawk Radhi Knapp had 40 points to lead all scorers. Veteran Ryan Carrafiello, from St. Thomas More, and rookie Tanner Lane, from Bishop Macdonnell in Guelph, each scored 22 points for the Mountaineers in the game which went right down to the wire.
And it was close from the opening tip when Mohawk led 57-53 at the half.
Mountaineers’ head coach Brian Jonker notes a number of the Spartans played four or five years in the CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sports) so they are more mature and bigger.
“They might be a bit out of shape from their playing days but they can still play,” said Jonker. “We’re young, a lot of 18-19-year-old guys against 30-something, strong men.”
Jonker thought his Ontario Colleges Athletic Association team did very well in the game which was its first this pre-season. “I was happy. I think we’re going to live a bit and die a bit by the three (pointer) but I don’t know if we’ll see a team deeper as far as guys that can make it. We don’t have a guy on the roster that can’t shoot it.”
