The Mohawk women’s basketball team rallied late to defeat the Georgian Grizzlies of Barrie 51-47 in a pre-season Ontario Colleges Athletic Association tilt at the Fennell Gymnasium on Saturday (Oct.3).
With the scored tied at 47,Tracy Lehane broke the stalemate with 10.2 seconds left and then with just 2.7 seconds remaining she added an insurance counter on a long in-bound pass.
Georgian was in front 22-17 at half time and their biggest lead in the game was 12 points in the second half. It was whittled down to a five point game favouring the Grizzlies with about 10 minutes to go.
Head coach Kelly Dunham said her team’s performance in the final 10 minutes is exactly how they need to play. “Very aggressive on offence, very deliberate. Defense is where our strength is right now.”
Morgan Taylor led Mohawk with 13 points. Michelle Abella and Katie Daniels had eight points apiece and Lehane scored seven. All of the top scorers are returning players, but coach Dunham said the younger players shone early in the game.
Mohawk has eight rookies on the pre-season roster of 15.
