The Mohawk men’s basketball team completed its pre-season with a 93-89 victory over the Regional Elite Development Academy at the Fennell Gymnasium on Wednesday (Oct. 7).
Ricky Heath sank five, three-pointers for 15 points while Ryan Carrafiello and Alex Reis also scored 15 each and Mike Soluk added 12 for the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Mountaineers. Top scorer in the game was Jehanns Manigat of REDA with 33.
Mohawk head coach Brian Jonker said it was another good competition for his team. “Anytime that we can get close games in the pre-season like this and the chance to work on some things, or see things we haven’t come across yet, it’s all positive,” said Jonker. The Mountaineers open the OCAA regular season Wednesday, Oct. 14 at Redeemer.
On Tuesday night, the Mountaineers ran into one tough opponent in the Guelph Phoenix. The Ontario University Athletics visitors won 124-80 in the exhibition match.
“They were extremely good,” Jonker said of the Phoenix. “They have two players who have had time with the national team in the last five years and nine of their 10 guys were multiple-year league All-Stars in the CIS.”
Radhi Knapp, who scored 40 points while playing for the Spartans club team against the Mountaineers Saturday, was in the Phoenix lineup this time and scored just five points. The Guelph team sported three other players his size or bigger.
Carrafiello led Mohawk with 18 points. Matt Cupido scored 13 points and Trevor Williams had 12. Guelph led 61-46 at the half.
“We played very hard and we were very happy with the result for the first 25 minutes,” said Jonker. “We seemed to run out of gas the last 15 minutes, but it was a good performance for our guys early in the year.”
