Burlington’s Danny Brannagan was named the most valuable player of the 2009 Desjardins Vanier Cup as the No. 4 Queen’s Gaels came from behind to defeat the No. 2 Calgary Dinos 33-31.
In addition to the MVP honour, Brannagan, in the final game of his CIS career, was named the male Pioneer Petroleums Ontario University Athletics Athlete of the Week.
The fifth-year accounting major threw for 286 yards and two touchdowns, including two in the second half as the Gaels overcame an 18-point halftime deficit. The comeback was the largest in Vanier Cup history and earned the Gaels their first national championship since 1992.
The female athlete of the week is field hockey player Tori Woods of Orangeville. The third-year forward scored four goals and collected seven points as the Guelph Gryphons defeated both the Toronto Varsity Blues and No. 10 York Lions on the weekend.
