MAC volleyball open season strong, collecting silver and bronze

mac_logoMountain Athletic Club (MAC) Volleyball has had an outstanding start to the 2009-10 Ontario Volleyball Association season with five teams winning five medals plus four teams finishing in the top six spots in Ontario wide competition.

The MAC 14U Girls won a Silver medal at the Girls Provincial Cup Zone B in Woodstock.

Finishing second in pool play , MAC 14U continued in the playoff round defeating the Halton Hurricanes Black 14U 22-20, 15-25,15-11 and the Halton Hurricanes Blue 14U 20-25, 25-11, 15-9 before losing a close championship match to the host Woodstock Warriors 25-11, 21-25, 12-15. The MAC 14U Girls team is coached by Siobhan Mondesire of Ancaster and Greg Elvikis of Ancaster.

The MAC 14U Boys played up an age division and had an excellent finish placing fifth at the 15U Boys Provincial Cup Zone A held in Barrie.

Placing second in pool play, MAC 14U lost close matches in the playoff round to the North Bay Wildcats 15U 25-20, 25-15 and the K.W. Predators 15U 25-23, 25-7, 14-16. The MAC 14U Boys team is coached by Duncan Gillespie of Hamilton, Andrzej Felinczak of Stoney Creek and Senan Farrell of Hamilton.

The MAC 15U Girls started their new season winning the Bronze medal at the 15U Provincial Cup Zone B in Georgetown.

Placing first in their pool, MAC 15U defeated the Cambridge Hawks 25-16, 25-11 in the quarter finals to move onto the semi finals where they lost to the Halton Hurricanes 25-15, 25-22. In the Bronze medal match, MAC15U defeated the KW Predators Purple 25-16, 25-14. The MAC 15U Girls team is coached by Jos Nederveen of Dundas, Michael Hall of Hamilton Mountain and Ludmil Hamanov of Mississauga.

The MAC 15U Boys won the Bronze medal at the 15U Provincial Cup Championship West in Stratford.

The boys placed first in their pool defeating the Chatham Ballhawks, Riverside Rage and the Niagara Rapids. In the quarter finals, MAC 15U defeated London Forest City 25-18, 20-25, 25-20 and then lost in the semi-finals to InterClub 23-25, 25-27. MAC 15U pressed on to defeat the defending Provincial Champions, the Niagara Rapids 25-23, 25-19 to win the Bronze medal. The team is coached by Mark Wu and Paul Guagliano of Hamilton Mountain.

The MAC 16U Girls finished fifth at their first 16U Girls Provincial Cup Zone B in Cambridge.

Finishing third in their pool, MAC 16U faced Interclub Black in the quarter finals losing 16 – 25, 25 – 21 ,6 – 15. MAC finished strong by defeating the Waterloo Tigers Black 25 – 18, 25 – 19 to place fifth. The MAC 16U girls team is coached by Meghan Boyle and Geoff Reiner of Ancaster.

The most recent addition to MAC Volleyball, the MAC 16U Boys team, played well to finish sixth at the 16U Provincial Cup Championship East in Markham.

In pool play, MAC 16U defeated the Ottawa Fusion 25-18, 17-25, 15-11; fell to Durham Attack 12-25, 28-26, 2-15 and the Riverside Rage 15-25, 12-25. In the quarter finals, MAC 16U was defeated by the Ottawa Mavericks 24-26, 15-25. The team is coached by Parrish Offer of Hamilton.

The Mountain Athletic Club (MAC) 17U Boys team placed fourth at the 17U Provincial Cup Championship held in Hamilton.

Finishing second in their pool, MAC 17U defeated the Ottawa Maverick Desperados 25-15, 17-25, 16-14 to win the quarter finals. In the semi finals, eventual tournament champions Crush overcame MAC winning 17-25, 10-25. In the Bronze medal match, MAC 17U was defeated by the Waterloo Tigers Black 16-25, 18-25 to finish fourth. The MAC 17U Boys is coached by Chris Marynowicz of Hamilton Mountain , Derek Jones of Burlington and Jeff Hargot of Stoney Creek.

The Mountain Athletic Club (MAC) Volleyball 18U Girls team claimed the Silver medal at the 18U Provincial Cup Championship in Cambridge.

Undefeated in pool play, the MAC 18U Girls defeated Burlington Fire and Fury 17U 18-25, 29-27, 15-10 to move on to the semi finals where they defeated the Ottawa Mavericks 26-24, 25-20. Element won the gold medal with a 23-25, 13-25 win over MAC. The MAC 18U girls team is coached by Denis Levesque of Kilbride, Jenn Eccles of Burlington and Mike Fuchs of Glanbrook.

The Mountain Athletic Club (MAC) Volleyball 18U Boys team opened their season in fine form winning the Silver medal at the 18U Provincial Cup Premier in Scarborough.

In pool play, MAC 18U finished second in their pool losing to eventual tournament champions Crush 21-25, 17-25, defeating London Forest City 32-30, 22-25, 15-13 and the Pacmen 25-14, 25-18. In the quarter finals, MAC 18U defeated Durham Attack 17U 25-13, 25-23 and moved on to defeat Toronto West 25-18, 21-25, 15-13 in the semi finals. Facing Crush once again in the Gold medal match, MAC 18U lost 16-25, 17-25 to take home the silver medal. The MAC 18U team is coached by Steve Bonazza of St. Catharines.
