Mohawk using tournaments to prep for OCAA play


The holiday break is over and it’s back to action for the Mohawk’s volleyball and basketball Mountaineers.

Mohawk’s volleyball teams will tuneup for second semester play in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association when they take part in the annual Limoilou men’s and women’s tournament in the Quebec City suburb this weekend (Jan. 8-10).

Men’s action starts Friday at 8:30 a.m. when the Mountaineers face the Fredericton Castors Under 21s from New Brunswick. Then at 7:00 p.m., Mohawk battles host Limoilou Titans.

Saturday, the men play Montmorency Nomades of Laval at 9 a.m. and finish the preliminaries against OCAA rival Seneca Sting at 2:15 p.m.

The Mohawk women open Friday at 10:15 a.m. against the St. Thomas University Tommies of Fredericton and meet Francois-Xavier-Garneau Elans of Quebec City at 1:45 p.m. Saturday, the women face Edouard-Montpetit Lynx of Longueuil Quebec at 10:45 a.m. and then take on Trois-Rivieres Diablos at 2:15 p.m. to complete pool play.

Semi finals are set for Sunday morning with the championship matches in mid-afternoon.

Mohawk’s basketball teams see their first action of 2010 in different tournaments this weekend.

The men are off to George Brown College in Toronto for the Huskies’ 32nd annual event, Friday and Saturday (Jan. 8-9).

The Mountaineers will meet St. Lawrence Vikings of Kingston in their opener Friday at 2 p.m. Other teams in the tourney include St. Clair, Durham, Fanshawe, Seneca, Algoma and host George Brown.

The Championship game will be Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, the women’s team is off to St. Lawrence College in Kingston for the 2nd annual Lady Vikings Invitational Tournament Friday and Saturday.

The Mountaineers’ first game will be against Loyalist Lancers Friday at 3 p.m.

Other teams in the event include Georgian, Champlain, Nouvelles-Frontieres, Algoma, Algonquin and host St. Lawrence-Kingston.
