The Mohawk men’s basketball team evened its Ontario Colleges Athletic Association record at 5-5, defeating the Lambton Lions of Sarnia 95-75 at the Fennell Gymnasium on Thursday (Jan. 14). It was their first game following the holiday break.
The Mountaineers jumped to an 8-0 lead, but the Lions battled back, tying the game at 22 and stayed with the home side until just before the end of the first half when Mohawk got a bit of breathing space, leading 42-35.
The Mountaineers finally started to get going after the break and sent the Lions to their ninth loss in 11 games.
“We had a lot of looks in the first half, but we didn’t make anything. The second half we made more shots. The guys kept plugging away,” said Mohawk coach Brian Jonker, who was pleased to start the second part of the season with a key win.
Jerome Smith and Ricky Heath each had 15 points for Mohawk. Alex Reis added 14.
The Mountaineers next game will be Tuesday, Jan. 19 when London Fanshawe visits the Fennell Gymnasium.
