MAC volleyball club stays in championship round


Moving up a division and ranked 10th out of 12 teams, Mountain Athletic Club (MAC) Volleyball 15U Girls finished fifth at the 15U McGregor Cup Championship West in Stratford.

In pool play, MAC 15U defeated the Waterdown Raiders 27-25, 25-22 with solid serving and passing from Eli Hamanova of Mississauga. MAC 15U followed up with match win against the Stratford Stingers 25-23, 25-15 and finished first in their pool.

In the playoff round against the Halton Hurricanes Black, MAC 15U lost a close 19-25, 23-25 match. Caitlin Genovy of Stoney Creek hit eight serves in a row to rally the team back from an 11-20 deficit in the second game.

For fifth place, Mac 15U finished with a solid win over the Aurora Storm Ice 23-25, 26-24, 17-15 and will remain in the Championship West Division for their next tournament on Feb. 13.

The 15U team is coached by Jos Nederveen of Dundas, Ludmil Hamanova of Mississauga and Mike Hall of Hamilton Mountain. MAC 15U team athletes include: Sara Toner, Carlisle; Roberta Dunlap, Waterdown; Sydney Kovar, Stoney Creek; Caitlin Genovy, Stoney Creek; Leah Sharp, Dundas; Jennifer Newell, Hamilton; Kaitlyn Mattiozzi, Hamilton; Joanna Jedrzejewska, Hamilton; Eli Hamanova, Mississauga.
