The Humber Hawks left Hamilton with a pair of Ontario Colleges Athletic Association basketball victories on Tuesday (Feb. 16).
In the men’s game, Humber, the West Region leader, made it 16 wins in 17 games, just getting by the Mohawk Mountaineers 58-56. Mohawk head coach Brian Jonker called it a tough loss, but one which won’t affect his team’s confidence or its position in the standings. The Mountaineers, who are now 10-7, are a solid fifth place in the division.
Nick Fadayel led Mohawk with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Jerome Smith had 12 points and Tanner Lane added seven.
Meanwhile, the Mohawk women bowed 65-52 to Humber, but played well in this one. Head coach Kelly Dunham was very happy with the effort.
“We came to play tonight. We were up at the half, leading 31-24, but we had some mental breakdowns and let them back in the game. It was a battle and a good game to watch.”
Michelle Abella had 15 points and Casey Boggs 14, for the 2-11 Mountaineers. Humber improved to 10-3 and sits second in the West Region behind unbeaten Sheridan.
