5-pin bowlers prepare to return ‘home’ for provincial tourney

This 46th edition of the Ontario 5-pin Bowlers’ Association 2010 Open Championships will be held at the Sherwood Centre in Hamilton from Wednesday, March 31 to Saturday, April 3.

Sherwood Centre has been the host centre to the provincial championships for 35 of the past 36 years. The best bowlers from 14 zones across Southern Ontario will compete in singles and team play over the four days. Each zone sends 23 bowlers and 4 coaches.

The top three men and the top three ladies for the 14 zones compete in singles play over 10 games. After those 10 games, the top five in each division advance to the stepladder finals Saturday afternoon from 12.30 to 2.30.

Teams competition is held in men’s, ladies’, mixed and senior mixed divisions with 13 qualifying games during play on Thursday and Friday. The top four teams in each division meet in a stepladder finals on Saturday morning. The top six ladies and the top six men in each zone form the ladies’ and men’s teams – this includes those who qualified for singles play. The seventh to ninth ranked ladies and men form the mixed teams for each zone.

The Ontario winners (except for the senior mixed team) advance to the Canadian 5-Pin Championships to be held in Winnipeg, June 2-5.

Hamilton association bowlers have been very successful over the years in these championships and last year won medals in all six events, including gold in men’s and mixed team play. Hamilton’s Martin Talbot is the defending men’s singles champion.

The 22nd annual Hall of Fame Game, honouring the stars and builders of the 5 pin game, will be played Wednesday afternoon.
