The Hamilton Bulldogs defeated the Heat 2-1 on Friday night in Abbotsford. Andre Benoit scored late in the third period while Cedrick Desjardins made 19 saves to win the American Hockey League game for Hamilton.
Hamilton opened the scoring at 1:03 of the first period. David Desharnais took a shot from the blue line that was stopped by Abbotsford goaltender David Shantz. Mike Glumac grabbed the rebound before backhanding the puck past Shantz.
The Heat tied the game at 7:19 of the second stanza while on the power play. Josh Meyers stopped a clearing attempt by the Bulldogs before blasting a shot from the right point. Cam Cunning tipped the puck over the shoulder of Cedrick Desjardins.
Benoit scored the game winner with 1:33 remaining in the game. His slapshot from the left point sailed through the legs of Shantz and into the net.
A crowd of 3,627 saw Hamilton outshoot the Heat 28-20.
The Bulldogs meet the Heat for a rematch tonight.
