McMaster University men’s rugby players Tyler Ardron (Lakefield, Ont.) and Ryan Fried (New Hamburg, Ont.) will represent Canada as part of the Under-20 National team competing at the International Rugby Board Junior World Rugby Trophy tournament that gets underway this week. The event is being held in Moscow, Russia, May 18-30.
Canada has been placed in Pool B of the competition, and will compete against Zimbabwe, Japan, and host Russia in preliminary round action. Canada opens against Zimbabwe today (Tuesday).
A complete schedule of the event can be found at http://www.irb.com/jwrt
The winner of the competition will qualify for promotion to the World Junior Championships in Italy next year.
Fried is one of six returning players from last year’s Under-20 Canadian team which competed at the World Junior Championship in Japan, finishing the competition in 14th place. Ardron spent last summer as a member of Team Ontario, which captured the gold medal at the 2009 Canada Summer Games in Prince Edward Island.
Ardron and Fried have recently completed their first year at McMaster and attended the Canadian team training camp in Victoria, B.C. in preparation for the trip to Russia.
McMaster flanker Keegan Selby (Lindsay, Ont.) is also suiting up on the international stage, as he has been added to the Canada Sevens squad for the last two IRB Sevens World Series events in the United Kingdom.
A two-time Ontario University Athletics Most Valuable Player (2007, 2008), Selby will join the Canada Sevens for the London Sevens tournament on May 22-23 and the Edinburgh Sevens competition set for May 29-30. The London event will be held at Twickenham Stadium, the largest rugby stadium in the UK, with a seating capacity of 82,000.
The McMaster men’s rugby team will look to capitalize on the international experience gained over the summer when it opens the 2010 OUA regular season in September. McMaster captured the OUA crown in 2008 and has won five of the last eight league titles.
