The Hamilton Lady Avalanche played their third game of the W-League season and came away with a win over the Rochester Raven’s on Wednesday night. On the shoulders of two second-half tallies from Olivia Colisimo and Laura Twidle, the Avalanche women outscored their opponents 2-0 at the Marina Auto Stadium. The win is their first of the season for the Avalanche and places them tied for 3rd spot in the Great Lakes division.
The Lady Avalanche remained determined to show improvement to the 2010 season on a positive note and played cautiously in the first half to determine their opponent’s strengths and weakness and wasted no time getting themselves on the scorecard early in the second half.
Colisimo notched her first of the season in the 48th minute receiving a pass from Nicole Michell then breaking down the right side of the field while cutting in on her left foot striking a ball from 25 yards out catching the goalie off her line and placing the shot into the top left corner past keeper Allie Weiser. The Avalanche continued to dominate the second half with long periods of possession that would see Twidle receive a through ball from Colisimo to bury the ball past the Ravens keeper again for the second goal.
Both teams created great opportunities in the second half but the Lady Avalanche remained firm in defence holding the Rochester squad off the scoreboard. Hamilton goalie Amy Holt was stellar in net for the Avalanche and defenders Shanika Thomas, Hayley Marler and Rachel Conway secured the back line for the team. Midfielders Chiara Greco, Chelsea Spencer, Tara Dawdy and Michell were steadfast in the midfield enabling the victory for Hamilton. The Avalanche return home on Wednesday night June 16th, 2010 for a game against their fierce W-League rivals the Toronto Lady Lynx at 6.30pm at Brian Timmins Stadium.
