Generals deny baseball Cardinals gold medal chance


The Hamilton Cardinals Minor Midgets advanced to the Silver Medal round of the recent 42-team Beast of the East Tournament in Wheeling, West Virginia, finishing as the top ranking Canadian team.

Here is a run down of some of the action.

July 1
Hamilton, 14, New Martinsville, W.V, 0.
Luke Barrowclough hit two home runs and had six RBI; Connor Bowie was 3-for-3 with a double and a triple while David Vanderby pitched 3 shutout innings in relief to get the win.

Hamilton, 8, Ohio Red Tornadoes, 2.
Barrowclough was 3-for-3, Todd Barta homered and Alex Szitas picked up the win.

July 2
Hamilton, 1, Norwin Knights, 2 .
Hamilton loaded the bases in the sixth and seventh but could not score. Losing pitcher David Ertl threw a gem.

Hamilton, 2, Ohio Longhorns, 5.
Adam Prodeus pitched well but took the loss as the Cardinal bats were silent.

July 3
Hamilton, 4, Baltimore Flat Rocks, 3.
Pitcher Johnny Hutton went 5 1/3 innings with six strikeouts and Ben Csiernik picked up the save. Lake Molleson was 2-for-2 with two RBI.

Hamilton, 14, Pittsburgh Militia, 7.
Szitas hit an inside the park home run, Hutton was 3-for-3 with two 2 RBI, and Nick Ranta pitched six innings to pick up the win.

July 4
Hamilton, 11, Georgetown 0
David Ertl threw a one hit, complete game shutout to lower his ERA to 0.78. Ranta made a spectacular catch in right field and then hit a grand slam in the 3rd inning.

Semi-final
Hamilton, 4, Harris County Generals, 6.
Hamilton pitchers melted in the 93 degree heat and were physically worn out after playing eight games in four days.
