The Brantford Red Sox scored five times in the first couple innings on their way to a 7-1 victory over the Hamilton Thunderbirds. With the win Brantford takes a 3-0 lead in the best of seven senior Intercounty Baseball League playoff series.
Josh McCurdy would lead off the game for the Red Sox with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. McCurdy would then score on Chris Emanuele’s single. Emanuele scored two batters later when Lee Delfino grounded into a double play.
Brantford extended its lead in the second as Tyler Patzalek led off with a single followed by a walk to Jason Gotwalt. Both runners advanced 90 feet on Wayne Forman’s sacrifice bunt, followed by a two-out single by McCurdy to bring in both runners. McCurdy scored on Emanuele’s second single of the game.
Hamilton would get its lone run in the bottom of the fifth. Chris Piano hit a one out single and stole second and third. As Piano stole third base, Forman’s throw went into left field which allowed Piano to score.
The Red Sox added a run in the seventh as Emanuele singled and advanced to second on Hyung Cho’s ground out to short. Emanuele reached third on a passed ball and scored when Lee Delfino reached base on an error. Brantford added one more run in the ninth off McCurdy’s solo homerun to left field.
Scott Robinson got the win for Brantford going eight innings, allowing one unearned run on six hits and striking out five. Mark James would close out the game for the Red Sox allowing a hit and a walk in the five batters he faced.
For Hamilton, Matt Martinow took the loss going eight and a third innings, allowing seven runs – six were earned – on 12 hits, walking two and striking out one. Nino Fasulo would pitch the final two-thirds of the game getting both batters he faced to fly out.
Brantford could close out the series on Friday night when they host at 8 p.m.
