Toronto Maple Leafs took a 2-0 lead in the Terry Steeves Cup series Sunday, defeating the Hamilton Thunderbirds 11-6 at Bernie Arbour Memorial Stadium.
Right-hander Ryan Mashinter got the victory going two innings while allowing one run on three hits and a walk. He struck out three batters. Mashinter had relief help from Lee Witmer, Matt Walker and Marek Deska
Matt Martinow took the loss for Hamilton giving up four runs on eight hits and three walks. He pitched two and one third innings. Joel Gattoni and Kyle Adoranti also pitched for the Thunderbirds.
Toronto won the opener in the exhibition series a week ago in Dominico Field, 3-0.
Tyler Fats paced the Leafs with a double and a two-run home run 345 feet over the left field fence in the third inning. Jon Lockwood, Damon Topolie, Danny Gibbons and junior Jesse Bartles also had two hits apiece. Toronto out hit Hamilton 17-10, and committed the game’s two errors.
For Hamilton, Dan Jagdeo cashed in for three hits, a double and two home runs. His first came in the fourth, a two-run effort 380 feet over the right field fence and a solo shot 365 feet over the same fence in the seventh inning. Jagdeo collected three RBI. Tyler Windisch and Kyle Gappa each had two hits including a double.
