The Niagara Knights have jumped to a perfect start with a pair of road victories this past weekend in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association men’s soccer. The two victories match the Knights’ win total last season when they finished with a 2-8-2 record.
Niagara opened the OCAA regular season with a 4-1 win at Lambton (0-1) on Saturday, and finished a successful southwestern road swing with a 2-1 win over St. Clair (0-1).
Six different players scored for Niagara in the two matches, including first-year midfielder Danilo Escobar (St. Catharines), fourth-year forward Matt Miedema (Burlington), first-year forward Jon Vanspronsen (Beamsville), first-year defender Martin Mamic (St. Catharines), second-year midfielder Derek Paterson (Niagara Falls) and first-year forward Komar Irandost (St. Catharines).
Nathan Vosbourgh scored for Lambton, while second-year forward Brian Santos (Leamington) booted St. Clair’s lone goal on the weekend.
Niagara goes after its third-straight victory when it hosts Ancaster’s Redeemer on Saturday.
In other OCAA play at Cambrian, the six-time defending OCAA champion Algonquin Thunder (1-0-0) picked up a 2-1 road victory against the Golden Shield on Saturday. On Sunday Cambrian was on the short end of another 2-1 score when the La Cite Coyotes earned the win.
At Centennial, the Durham Lords (1-0-0) were the only team to keep the opposition off the scoreboard on the weekend, defeating the Colts 3-0 on Sunday.
All road teams earned victories this past weekend.
