Jessica Denstedt tossed a six inning no-hitter as the Mohawk women’s fastball team blanked Conestoga, 13-0, sweeping a doubleheader of the Condors to open the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association season in Kitchener on Tuesday (Sep. 14).
The Mountaineers won the opener, 10-4.
Denstedt threw just 47 pitches as the nightcap was called after six frames because of the mercy rule.
In the opener, Jessica Roloson pitched a complete game to pick up the victory.
What a difference a year makes. After scoring very few runs all of last season the Mountaineers came storming out of the gate. And head coach Brian Weller said everyone was hitting.
“From top to bottom in both games, the team played very well offensively. Rookie Sara Simmons, who was the designated player in both games, drove in a bunch of runs.”
The coach said the team also showed stellar defence.
Mohawk has a twin bill to open the home season Tuesday, Sept. 21, as the Durham Lords visit Mohawk Sports Park for games at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
