Mohawk coach pleased with effort despite loss

mountaineersFor an exhibition men’s volleyball game, Mohawk and McMaster put on a spirited effort at the Fennell Gymnasium on Thursday (Sep. 16).

In the end the university Marauders won, but there were several close games to the delight of a good sized pre-season crowd. The teams elected to play five sets and Mac, which competes in Ontario University Athletics, prevailed 4-1. The scores were 25-22, 25-14, 23-25, 25-23 and 15-9.

Justin Scapinello led the Mountaineers, who play in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association, with 16 kills, two stuff blocks and one service ace for 19 offensive points. Mo Sulaiman had 17 points from 16 kills and one block. Ryan Dela Rosa recorded 10 digs.

Tyson Alexander led McMaster with seven kills, two blocks and four aces for 13 points.

Mohawk head coach Matt Schnarr thought his team played well for the first four sets and showed they have the ability to play top level ball. He noted his squad was able to contain Mac’s Kevin Stevens, a Junior National and the MVP of the NTCC training centre. Schnarr said his defence was solid but the offence needs work.

OCAA league play starts next month.
