Stoney Creek Warriors pound Wheatfield for third win


WarriorsThe Stoney Creek Jr. B Warriors (3-1) moved into sole possession of second-place by hammering the Wheatfield Blades 6-1 at Valley Park Arena on Saturday evening. The Warriors third consecutive win also puts them within striking distance of the first-place Thorold Blackhawks, who they now only trail by two points. Thorold will play in Stoney Creek on Thursday Oct. 7.

The hot line of Marcus Ruberto (1 goal, 2 assists), Myles Falasco (2 goals, 1 assist) and Mike Casale (2 assists) accounted for 8 points. David Ruberto scored a goal and an assist to retake the league lead in scoring (6 goals 4 assists). His brother Marcus moved into a third place tie with his 3pts tonight (1 goals 7 assists).

Although Stoney Creek outshot the Blades 12-6 in the first period, the Warriors’ Dylan Boyd was the only marksman of the period, scoring at 14:45 from Dan Hewko and Rob Elmer.

The Warriors had the edge in shots again in the second period 12-8, however Wheatfield goaltender Jacob DiDomenico was turning in a strong performance.

Myles Falasca scored his first of the night just :14 into the frame with Marcus Ruberto and Mike Casale assisting. Wheatfield would get that back at 14:59 on the powerplay when Mitchell Eisenberger scored. That would all the scoring the Blades would muster against Warrior goaltender Chris Miniaci, now 2-0 on the season.

The flood gates would be blown wide open in the third period. At 2:55 Marcus Ruberto scored from Falasco and Casale, then at 4:22 defenceman Danny Carter counted from David Ruberto to make the score 4-1. The Warriors peppered DiDomenico all period and finally got another one on the powerplay at 14:20 when Falasco scored his second of the game. Marcus Ruberto and Luke Watson added assists.

Warrior centre David Ruberto rounded out the scoring at 15:27. Luke Watson picked up the lone assist, and his second point of the night.

The Warriors, who remain unbeaten at home, outshot the Blades 20-4 in the 3rd period and in the game 44-18.

Stoney Creek’s next game is Sunday September 26th at 3:00 p.m. in Port Colbourne.

The Warriors next home game is set for Thursday September 30th when the 3rd-place St. Catharines Falcons come to town. Game time at Valley Park arena is 7:30 p.m.
