Mohawk coach encouraged despite exhibition loss

The Mohawk Mountaineers turned in a good performance but dropped a 3-1 decision to McMaster Marauders in an exhibition women’s volleyball match at the Fennell Gymnasium on Wednesday (Sept. 22).

Mac won 25-20, 25-16, 19-25, 25-21. In the final set, Mohawk trailed 7-0, before rallying to make it close. The Knowles sisters led the Mountaineers: Jennifer had 12 kills, three service aces and 10 digs; her sister, Jessica, a newcomer to the team, had seven kills, two stuff blocks and five digs.

Kailee Stock paced the Marauders with eight kills and two blocks.

Mountaineers’ coach Sean Pellow felt his squad turned in a pretty good performance, especially considering it was the team’s first competitive match, while McMaster, which competes in Ontario University Athletics, played a tournament in Montreal this past weekend.

“We showed pretty well,” said Pellow. “Some first year players stepped up and showed good character. The veterans could have been a little more solid, especially on reaction plays. We have lots of work to do, but we have lots of potential.”
