Mountaineers pick up first win in men’s OCAA soccer play

Scott McLeod’s late first half goal turned out to be the winner as the Mohawk men’s soccer team won its first game of the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association season, 2-1, over the St. Clair Saints in Windsor on Friday (Sep. 24).

Venroy Baird converted an Adam Petrina cross in the first quarter hour to put the Mountaineers ahead, but the Saints tied the score. Mohawk head coach Richard Bennett said his team could have scored a lot more.

“We had many missed opportunities including empty nets,” said Bennett. “We need more concentration. We’ll take the victory and run with it.” Mohawk is now 1-0-2.

Mohawk will look for its second win of the season when the Mountaineers move on to Sarnia to play the Lambton Lions this (Saturday).
