The Ontario University Athletics No. 3 ranked Western Mustangs defeated the visiting McMaster Marauders, 3-2, in men’s soccer action Saturday (Sept. 25).
Western took an early 1-0 lead, until McMaster’s Aaron Boothe (Whitby) tied the game in the 36th minute. Early in the second half, Western took the lead again off a goal from Eric Amato (Toronto). His penalty kick was stopped by McMaster keeper Matthew Grant (Brampton) but Amato managed to tap in the rebound on the two-yard line to put Western up by one.
The Mustangs held onto their lead until the 80th minute, when Vincent Ientile came off the McMaster bench to tie the game at 2-2. Western answered five minutes later, as Andrew Chan (Markham) scored the game winner.
The loss puts the McMaster Marauders at 4-3-1 on the season, tied for second place in the OUA West division. Tomorrow the team travels to Windsor, to take on the fifth place Lancers at 3:15 p.m. The last time these two teams met, they played to a scoreless draw.
