Mohawk divided an Ontario Colleges Athletic Association exhibition basketball doubleheader with Fleming College of Peterborough on Saturday (Sep. 25) at the Fennell Gymnasium.
The men downed the Knights 76-58 but the women bowed 45-33 to the visitors from the Liftlock City.
In the men’s game, a pair of transfers from McMaster led the Mountaineers’ attack. Aminu Bello had 28 points and Jermaine De Costa scored 19. Veteran Mike Soluk chipped in with eight points.
Mohawk head coach Brian Jonker said the first game for his new squad was a bit sloppy, but not without encouraging signs.
In the women’s game, Morgan Taylor scored 14 points while Rachelle Abella had four. Kevin Duffy, who has stepped up from the assistant’s ranks to be head coach of the Mountaineers, thought the team played well, considering the limited practise time.
“We missed a lot of easy shots,” said Duffy, “but that will come once we get our timing down a bit better with the offense. It was a real good litmus test for our rookies as they got a taste of the speed and physicality of college basketball.”
